WE HAVE BABY CHICKS!!!! Our baby chicks began to hatch on Wednesday. Two out of seven hatched but only one of the two survived. Now the students are really learning what it's like taking care of a pet. This classroom pet is really loud but the students don't mind. They love it. The students are responsible for feeding, watering, and cleaning out the cage twice a day. They are being great "parents" to our class pet. To see a video of the chick hatching, go to our school blog, Houstonelementaryschool.blogspot.com. It's adorable!!!!!!

Give Me A Brown Box.........
This week we have been talking about poetry. In our vocabulary read aloud we read a story about a girl who used her imagination and turned a brown box into a castle with a draw bridge and a moat, a red barn with a silo and a goat, and an igloo with a polar bear. We decided to use our imagination and see what we could create with a brown box. Below are pictures of our final projects and our poems. They turned out great!
Give me a brown box, and I'll give you a car with a seat and wheels and a blue paint job, eyes and smile that is funny. By: Giovanni, Evan, Haley, Tatelynn, Eli, and Ciara
Give me a brown box and I'll give you a school with a front door and playground and a basketball court and a lunchroom with people eating lunch, with a gym glass.

Good Bye, Lucky!!
Today was our last day with our little friend, Lucky. He is getting too big to stay in the classroom so he will now be staying at my house. We wrote "Thank You" letters today to the Donorschoose.orgTeam who gave us the grant for the incubator and brooder. Houston Elementary School has been blessed with 5 activetables. These are used like a Promeathean Board or just really big Ipads.1-6 students can use it at a time and they can play learning games and connect to the internet. "A _____ Can Be A Good Pet"
This week we have been talking about how pets can be good for people. As a end of the lesson project, students worked in groups to make a poster about what they thought would make the best pet. Some wanted to choose chimpanzees but we decided together that a chimp wouldn't make a great pet. The posters were outstanding!!! I have several artists in my classroom. After looking at the pictures, which animal do you think would be a good pet?????
Watch Them Hatch
I am happy to say that our class was awarded a grant for our project "Watch Them Hatch". In a few weeks we will be hatching chickens in our classroom!! This will be an extension of our animal unit. You will find a participation letter in your child's Friday Folder this week. If you wish for your child to participate in this project, please sign and return the letter on Monday.

"The Life of George Washington Cavter"
This week, we read the story "The Life of George Washington Carver". We learned about the many things that were made from peanuts such as ink, dye, makeup, shampoo, and plastic. On Friday, all the 2nd grade classrooms joined together in making peanut butter. Mrs. Tyson asked the studnets many questons from the weeks lesson while Mrs. Carter and myself worked on making the peanut butter. The students were all well behaved and payed attention!!! Perhaps the best part of it all was that they LOVED the peanut butter.
Today was the 100th Day of School. We celebrated by bringing in 100 items, painting 100 dots, drawing ourselves at 100 years old. Check out our slide slow pictures below to see all the fun we had!!
Friday Fun!!!
This week we read the story "Annie's Gift". This story was about a little girl who wanted to play a musical instrument but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't. All her family could play an instrument. Why couldn't Annie? She tried playing the recorder, trumpet, chello, and piano. Everytime she played it sounded horrendous!!
Annie learned that her special gift was not playing an instrument but writing poetry and drawing. She learned that everyone has a different special gift. Today we showed our special gifts by making and decorating tambourines. We look forward to learning more about musical instruments next week.
Also, in the pictures below, students were rewarded for making their 3rd Six Weeks AR goal by having an ice cream party!!!

Happy Grandparents Day!!!!!
Today was a very special day in 2nd Grade. Today was Grandparents Day! We had several Grandparents to come and eat lunch with us. We had a wonderful time. Thanks to all the wonderful Grandparents who came!!!
September 15th is International Dot Day!!
What is International Dot Day? It is inspired by the story "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds
“Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to
her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a
gentle invitation to express herself.
But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove
her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and
angry mark. "There!" she says.
That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s
journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of
Peter H. Reynolds’ delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us. With
a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Reynolds' book, The
Dot, has been transformed into a magical animated short film, enticing
even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark - and follow where it
takes us.”
